What is engine oil, and what does the oil do?

Engine oil, also called motor oil, is a special blend of oils and additives designed to reduce the friction of the moving parts in your engine. This oil also absorbs heat created by the moving parts and the engine in general to prevent overheating. There are many brands and types of engine oil available, each with a unique blend. If you’re unsure which type is best for your vehicle and budget, our team can assist you in making the right decision.

What is an oil change and why do I need one?

During an oil change, a mechanic removes the old oil from your engine and replaces it with new oil. They will also replace your engine oil filter. Oil changes are essential because they reduce the wear and tear of your engine, and the likelihood of overheating. Over time, engine oil breaks down and becomes less effective as a heat absorber and lubricant. When this happens, the oil needs to be replaced with fresh.

How often should I get my oil changed?

This answer can really depend based on your car and driving habits. There are a few different schools of thought:

Replace Oil Every 1,000 Miles

If the majority of your trips are shorter than 10 miles, your vehicle’s engine really isn’t getting hot enough to boil the condensation in the system. This excess condensation can cause oil to break down much faster. The act of turning your car on actually causes more wear and tear than long rides, as well. If your driving consists of mostly city driving with lots of stops and starts, getting your oil changed every 1,000 miles might be best.

Replace Oil Every 3,000 Miles

This is considered the industry standard from mechanics and shops. Getting your oil changed every 3,000 miles ensured drivers who are hard on their vehicles without knowing it (city drivers, especially) get regular oil changes. This is also good for cars that are a little bit older, when we experience extremes in temperature or if you spend a lot of time on dusty roads.

Replace Oil Every 5,000 Miles

With newer vehicles and average driving, you can usually get away with an oil change every 5,000 miles. This is actually what is recommended by most vehicle manufacturers for those who spend a fair amount of time on the highway.

Replace Oil Every 10,000 Miles

Using synthetic oil can greatly prolong the time between oil changes, up to 10,000 miles. Synthetic oil, while being more expensive, does perform better, last longer and is better for the environment. HOwever, experts don’t recommend switching to synthetic oil unless your car actually needs it. Certain types of newer cars, models that are more prone to issues with clogging or sludge, or vehicles that tow heavy loads can all benefit from using synthetic oil.
